Curating a Travel-Friendly Wardrobe for Donna, the World Traveller

At You Chicy Thing”, we believe style doesn’t have to be sacrificed for simplicity. When Donna, a globe-trotting friend who travels the world as a house-sitter, reached out, she shared her unique challenge: living out of one small suitcase, which serves as her entire wardrobe. With a limited collection of clothing, each item needed to be versatile, easy to style, and ready for any adventure. Donna wanted a curated, cohesive wardrobe that could carry her from new country to new country in effortless style.

The Challenge: Limited Space, Limitless Style

Donna came to us with a suitcase of essentials, but there was room for refinement. She wanted help coordinating her outfits for maximum versatility and was particularly stumped by one dress that had been a bit of an enigma in her travels. Donna’s goal was clear: she wanted optimum wear from every piece in her suitcase without feeling repetitive or underdressed. Our task? To make sure every item was working with the others to give her the chic, curated look she desired.

Step 1: Curate and Eliminate

First, we reviewed each piece Donna had. We assessed colours, cuts, fabrics, and how they could pair with one another. While Donna’s suitcase already held a few key items, there were a few pieces that simply weren’t pulling their weight. By letting go of these underperforming items, we created more breathing room for items that offered greater flexibility. This minimalism ensured every piece in her suitcase was fully functional and layered beautifully with her other clothing.

Step 2: Adding Purposeful Pieces

To compliment her core collection, we introduced a few strategic additions. We chose items in neutral colours and classic cuts that aligned with Donna’s lifestyle, blending comfort with effortless sophistication. These pieces could be easily dressed up or down depending on her travel needs. Lightweight fabrics were a priority, given that Donna’s travels often require packing light and keeping things as low-maintenance as possible.

Step 3: Unleashing the Potential of the Dress

The dress Donna brought to us was lovely but underutilised because she hadn’t found ways to make it work in multiple contexts. We explored styling options, adding layering pieces and a belt to change the silhouette and make the dress a go-to for both casual days and more formal settings. With a little creativity, we transformed that single dress into a multifunctional piece that could seamlessly fit into any part of her travels.

 The Result: Style and Simplicity

By the end of our session, Donna left with a suitcase that finally reflected her needs and her style. Each piece harmonised with the others, allowing her to create multiple outfits from minimal clothing while staying true to her adventurous, no-fuss lifestyle. Now, whether she’s enjoying a quaint café in Europe or lounging in the Pacific Islands, Donna can feel confident and stylish—without needing to carry more than she absolutely loves.

At “You Chicy Thing”, we’re honoured to help incredible women like Donna achieve their style goals, no matter the lifestyle. Whether you’re a world traveller or just looking to refine your everyday wardrobe, our mission is to help you feel chic and confident every step of the way!

Shelley! You are amazing, I love your web site! And I am loving my wardrobe (suitcase). From you I went to NZ and enjoyed every outfit combination we tried on and I had so many comments! It was so easy and felt so good. I am currently in Tonga, so I am actually wearing very little! Our next move is Europe and I am already packed – in my head! I am so ready and can’t wait to show off my new style. Can’t wait to see you dear friend xxx
